NTP users are strongly urged to take immediate action to ensure that their NTP daemons are not susceptible to being used in distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks. Please also take this opportunity to defeat denial-of-service attacks by implementing Ingress and Egress filtering through BCP38.

ntp-4.2.8p10 was released on 21 March 2017. It addresses 6 medium- and 5 low-severity security issues, 4 informational security topics, 15 bugfixes, and contains other improvements over 4.2.8p9.

Please see the NTP Security Notice for vulnerability and mitigation details.

Discussion of changes to the GettingStarted page

Create this page. I've chopped out some of the page-structuring commands because I don't think we will need them. Put them back in if you think they have a place.

We should probably maintain this like a web log, adding contributions at the end of the page, with each person's name/date signature at the bottom of his contribution.

I inserted the Introduction section as previously posted on the newsgroup.

I put in the "An even shorter quickstart..." line at the top, (1) so that there's a reference to the existing quickstart (quick.html), and (2) so that the really impatient will have a place to start.

I also did some editing on the "Is it ntp or xntp?" topic to make it clearer. I used "fixed width" formatting in a few places for program names. (You enter it as text. Unfortunately, you can't put double-quotes around a fixed-width word, the Twiki formatter won't detect the equals.) I did delete the statement that NTPv4 is better than NTPv3, not because it's wrong, but because it doesn't fit with the topic and provides no information the reader can act on.

Your suggestion of "adding contributions at the end of the page, with each person's name/date signature at the bottom of his contribution" is exactly how Wiki discussions are conducted (with one exception in the case of "thread splits"). Each contributor should add a separator (---) before their contribution. In the case of a "thread split", use a double separator. And contributors should ensure that they append their posts to the correct "thread".

I changed the quick.html link that you re-inserted to point to the NTP Quick Start Page (or QuickStartPage). This topic includes (on-the-fly) the current version http://www.eecis.udel.edu/~mills/ntp/html/quick.html

I'd really rather you hadn't changed the quick.html link, so that it remains documentation of where quick.html really is. Now, if you print this page, you lose the ability to follow the link.

I've put in the link to the NTP reference clock drivers page at the end of the introduction.

Your point about about having the real quick.html link for documentation when the topic is printed is good one. But I think that including the contents of http://www.eecis.udel.edu/~mills/ntp/html/quick.html as the QuickStartPage is also a good thing because it makes quick.html a part of the overall documentation navigation structure.

The real quick.html URL is now visible on the printed version of GettingStarted (in place of the link to QuickStartPage). Click the Printable link in the topic link-bar to see the printer friendly version of the topic.
