NTP users are strongly urged to take immediate action to ensure that their NTP daemons are not susceptible to being used in distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks. Please also take this opportunity to defeat denial-of-service attacks by implementing Ingress and Egress filtering through BCP38.

ntp-4.2.8p15 was released on 23 June 2020. It addresses 1 medium-severity security issue in ntpd, and provides 13 non-security bugfixes over 4.2.8p13.

Leaner and Meaner ntpd

One person's signal is another person's noise.

ntpd is used in a wide variety of environments. Some of them want to use all of the available features, and some want the leanest possible installation.

This topic can be used to discuss features of the implementation that some people would like to have disabled.

Proposed Selective Features

Disable the saveconfig remote configuration mechanism.

Disable the binding of all of the system interfaces and bind only the wildcard address instead. Use the PKTINFO information to pick up the destination address. Also disable all of the features that depend on binding the individual addresses.
