NTP users are strongly urged to take immediate action to ensure that their NTP daemons are not susceptible to being used in distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks. Please also take this opportunity to defeat denial-of-service attacks by implementing Ingress and Egress filtering through BCP38.

ntpd is designed to be used in conjunction with one or more Remote Time Servers and / or Local Refclocks.

As a special case, when your ntpd is serving time to others, you may wish to include the Undisciplined Local Clock as a source of time. Doing so will allow your ntpd to claim to be synchronized in the event that connectivity to your true time sources is lost.
